Il Laboratorio è Polo dell’Università degli studi di Roma “Sapienza” con sede a Giuliano di Roma e svolge attività di ricerca su prototipi di strutture intelligenti in collaborazione con i dipartimenti di Ingegneria strutturale, Ingegneria geotecnica, Ingegneria elettronica, Ingegneria meccanica, Ingegneria aeronautica e Metodi e modelli matematici.

Sin dal 1997 il gruppo di ricerca, attualmente operante nel laboratorio, si occupa del tema dello smorzamento delle vibrazioni di strutture meccaniche accoppiate con sistemi elettronici mediante trasduttori piezoelettrici. In questo ambito la ricerca è orientata al controllo della dinamica strutturale in ambito lineare e nonlineare.

Durante l’anno 2009 il Laboratorio di Strutture e Materiali Intelligenti ha fissato come obiettivo lo studio di sistemi di controllo applicati a strutture caratterizzate da parametri incerti.

Si è colta l’occasione di affrontare lo studio anche di nuovi problemi in cui l’indagine delle incertezze strutturali fosse ignorata dalla letteratura e su cui fosse possibile lavorare al fine di studiare metodologie tradizionali ed eventualmente proporne di nuove.

I problemi che si sono affrontati a questo scopo sono stati i seguenti:

  1. Modellazione delle incertezze in strutture disomogenee con disomogeneità incognita ed eccitate per mezzo di attuatori piezoelettrici;
  2. Analisi di metalli soggetti all’azione di carichi esterni e inducenti modifiche strutturali, quali anisotropia e resistenza del materiale.

Il primo punto ha costituito un’importante occasione di interazione con altre Università sui temi fondanti questo laboratorio, dando allo stesso tempo la possibilità di:

  1. acquisire esperienza sull’uso di tecniche di modellazione non deterministica;
  2. sviluppare argomenti innovativi e di interesse dove problematiche di modellazione dell’incertezza hanno ricevuto molta poca attenzione.

Il secondo punto è la naturale estensione e adattamento di un lavoro che ormai da 6 anni questo Laboratorio svolge con riconoscimenti internazionali.
